How we cracked SkidRow
Posted by gautami | Filed under Uncategorized
If it’s Saarang, one thing stays constant – our team never ceases to ‘put fight’.
And this year, they did put hajjar fight.
While we already had a towering band in HammerFall performing at our Rock Show, we thought we should aim higher. We knew Skid Row would be in town almost during the same time as Saarang and to devoid the fans of an opportunity to see them perform at Saarang sounded criminal to us. So, we did the needful – put fight.
It was one marathon night for our professional shows team when they had an umpteen number of email exchanges with the Skid Row manager – to gauge their interest, to make an offer and to get their confirmation – all in the spate of 10 hours! From 10 PM to 8 AM India time. Once we got to know that there is an outside chance to get them to Saarang, our team jumped onto it – providing every minor detail and clarification that was asked for. The result was truly satisfying – with the dawn of the day came the confirmation from their manager. And since then has began a whole new round of putting fight.
The result is for you to see – 1900 hours, Open Air Theatre, IIT Madras, 25th January, 2010 – Saarang will host the largest rock show yet in India featuring HammerFall and Skid Row. Be there. Live a Saarang.
PS: Oh, and the whole professional shows team missed their classes the next day. Nonetheless, a night-out well spent!

Because its Saarang
Posted by neeraj | Filed under Uncategorized
One day you wake up and see it happening.
Why we do it? Because its Saarang.
The forty Saarang teams till date have invested a time equal to the age of this events core to make each Saarang, The Saarang.
Why they did it? Because its Saarang.
Six months a year spent planning Saarang gives us in return five days when 50000 people put all their other plans on hold just to be here.
Why they do it? Because its Saarang.
A team envisions to put in place an event that no other festival ventures to organize merely because of the heavy odds against succeeding: the Theatre Fest.
Why we succeeded? Because its Saarang.
People in Chennai with have grown with memories of Saarang that most people like me coming from north of Vindhyas had been well oblivious of until we entered IITM. Yet, each year as we climb higher the ladder Saarang ceases to become merely a cultural festival for us; it becomes a part of being so important that one would rather be willing to watch Love Story 2050 50 times over just to be a part of this fest.
A fresher at IITM may miss classes, keep all other work aside just to move chairs in OAT to make the show happen. Now, that for me is Saarang.
To come to a place alone perhaps, participate in events, show some wits, win some goodies and walk back with a bunch of friends. That is Saarang for me.
All through the year, you walk past the OAT, dwarfed by its gigantic size and see it used only once a week if the rains permit. These five days you no longer walk past OAT. You become a part of it and with all the preparations leading to the proshow you make OAT come alive. It breathes, throbs and lives only these five days. That for me is Saarang.
You love to hear a voice over and over again. You want it to win at Saarang. If, however, on the day it doesnt you still walk back deeply satisfied because you know that the best voice in the auditorium has won. That for me is Saarang.
And then one day you wake up to see that its all over. But there is nothing more that could have been asked for. Nothing that could have made it livelier because those five days were a life itself. All this and more only because its Saarang.
Time to come alive. Time to live a Saarang.

One Team, One Aim

Saarang 2010 core team
The title of this post is the phrase that really struck me when I was surfing the web a few days back and got me thinking, because of the use of the word “aim”. I am sure all of us have heard variations of the same phrase which used the word goal, but never aim. And I guess the real reason it got me was that this is the philosophy behind the Saarang organizing team.
People have this way of looking at goals as fixed targets to be reached. This definition in itself is limiting at times. Substituting with the word “goal” with “aim” essentially gives us this philosophical leeway to explore all of our ideas, think out of the box and know that there are no limits to what we can achieve in these months leading up to Saarang.
Does this mean we don’t have any goals? Definitely not!! But rather than limiting targets, what we have for Saarang is a vision, a dream. Having worked with the team for the past few months, I can see the same thought process in all of them, using each target reached as a stepping stone for the next.
**Further surfing brought up the fact that this is one of the core philosophies of Toyota. Following in their footsteps, I guess we can’t be far off the mark now, can we?
We’re Back!!

From the modest beginnings as Mardi Gras, Saarang has achieved an iconic status today as the mother of all cultural fests.
Saarang 2009 was an astounding success, unquestionably the high point in the festival’s 40 year history. With performances from artists like Sonu Nigam adding to the festive atmosphere and initiatives like the 3-day long theater-fest, Saarang village and Mardras-Chennai express, Saarang 2009 ventured into hitherto unexplored territories and diversified itself to cater to a bigger audience.
Words are simply not enough to describe the atmosphere during the spell binding and magical night that was the rock show. And the perpetrators of this magic were Opeth, the Swedish death metal band who were performing for the first time in India. Holding ten thousand young adults captive for any amount of time is no mean feat. The fact that Opeth pulled it off for a few hours at a stretch just asserts to their greatness.
All of these efforts contributed toward Saarang 2009 setting new standards as far as student run cultural fests go.
And after a six month hiatus, the Saarang team is up and running again! Because who better to break those records set by Saarang 2009 than Saarang 2010?
With bigger professional shows and a think tank to give Saarang a fresh new look, Saarang 2010 is a stage set for exceeding expectations. With greater incentives and better platforms for participants, a long list of celebrities from varied fields of entertainment and a lot of informal events to keep you entertained, Saarang 2010 is all set to captivate and enchant you!
As we at IIT-M like to say, Saarang doesn’t meet your expectations, it exceeds them. We can at times find ourselves rushing and forgetting the important things that life has to offer. Saarang, in its essence is just a gentle reminder to us all that life is about living. To quote a participant,
“Love life, Live a Saarang”
Keep watching this space for a behind the scenes perspective of the organization and other fun trivia about Saarang 2010.
