Saarang goes truly international!

Here at Saarang, our dedicated team has always strived to bring to you the best performances, acts and troupes as part of our ProShows. But this time we’ve gone international!

With World Culture Show, we present to you three inspiring and technically stupendous shows that promise to blow your senses.

On the 26th of January, we’ve got, in collaboration with Alliance Française de Madras, In Vivo, a unique choreographic play by the French dance troupe S’poart, which has received rave reviews world over. Through the vibrations of hip hop dancing, the intention is to express on the scene, a humanity where each person exists, far from clichés, in an individual richness nourished by his relationship to others.

On the 28th of January, the Houston based Hip Hop group Havikoro will be conducting a break dancing workshop at the Students Activity Centre, followed by a hip-hop and beat-boxing performance. After touring Helsinki, Moscow, Paris, Frankfurt, Hannover, Tokyo, Seoul, New Zealand, London, Zurich, Baku, and all major U.S. cities, Havikoro plans on bringing a positive message to the young people of Chennai through Break Dance, Rap and other forms of Hip Hop style.

Finally on the 29th of January, Saarang is proud to host Laurent Decol, one of the best mime performers in the world and credited with putting French Mime on the world scene. His highly acclaimed production, ‘Les Mots Du Silence’ (Words of Silence) mime show is about how human nature is made up of small habits much like the sea shore that is composed of minute grains of sand, and the how the human body is equipped to go through various motions to show a person’s character. Decol’s acts show his unique ability to emote entirely through his gestures and facial expressions, without speaking a single word.

Join us at Saarang 2011 for these thought provoking and innovative performances.

Saarang 2011, Be

Long ago, in a land not so far away, there lived some people. These people were just your average run of the mill guys, but they had a dream, an incredible dream. And that dream’s name was Mardi Gras.

Years passed, people came and went, but the dream stayed. With each passing year, an enthusiastic few added to that dream, making it bigger and bigger. After sometime, Mardi Gras could no longer aptly describe the dream and hence like a phoenix it was reborn as Saarang.

Fast-forward to today and you are looking at one of the biggest cultural fests this side of the world. With innumerable events, lectures by some eminent celebrities, and a plethora of other things, the dream has reached astronomical proportions. And to top it off, each year we have proshows from some of the biggest names in the world.

Saarang 2010 witnessed fierce competition, mad skills, and insane proshows. With footfall numbering in the tens of thousands, Saarang 2010 turned IITM into a mini-city.

Last year was great, but this year will be even better. With big name proshows, fun events, and attractive prize money, Saarang 2011 promises to push your endorphin levels to dangerous levels of pleasure.

In another 3 weeks, the next incarnation of this dream arrives. At that time, all you can do is get ready, put on a smile, and live the dream. Welcome to Saarang 2011, where dreams become reality!

Author’s claim at becoming quotable: If you think there is something like the Murphy’s law, it doesnt work for Saarang. If something can go right, it always will at Saarang.

Not that I would want to be quoted too often but after this Saarang that is invariably bound to happen.

The news of Gautham Menon coming to Saarang came as a Tweet. Apart from 93 twitter updates from Shashi Tharoor, our lecdems coordinator had one that confirmed Gautham Menon’s participation at Saarang.

Gautham Menon will deliver a lecture at ICSR main auditorium on January 22.

Kamal at Saarang

The galaxy of stars at Saarang 2010 only gets bigger with Kamal Haasan inaugrating the events at this extravagant festival.

It all started with the vision of the Saarang team to make the best and foremost stars of world cinema to come to Saarang. The process of getting Kamal Haasan would have frustrated any other person but Rinju – our lecdems coordinator. After 543 calls, 6 months, confirmations, reconfirmations the Saarang team found itself in Kamal Haasan’s office who said- ‘I will be there’.

Kamal Haasan will deliver a lecture at 9 AM in ICSR main auditorium on 22nd January.

Will you be there?

Mail the questions you want to ask Kamal Haasan to askkamal@saarang.org and select few questions will be answered by him at the lecture.

Because its Saarang

One day you wake up and see it happening.

Why we do it? Because its Saarang.

The forty Saarang teams till date have invested a time equal to the age of this events core to make each Saarang, The Saarang.

Why they did it? Because its Saarang.

Six months a year spent planning Saarang gives us in return five days when 50000 people put all their other plans on hold just to be here.

Why they do it? Because its Saarang.

A team envisions to put in place an event that no other festival ventures to organize merely because of the heavy odds against succeeding: the Theatre Fest.

Why we succeeded? Because its Saarang.

People in Chennai with have grown with memories of Saarang that most people like me coming from north of Vindhyas had been well oblivious of until we entered IITM. Yet, each year as we climb higher the ladder Saarang ceases to become merely a cultural festival for us; it becomes a part of being so important that one would rather be willing to watch Love Story 2050 50 times over just to be a part of this fest.

A fresher at IITM may miss classes, keep all other work aside just to move chairs in OAT to make the show happen. Now, that for me is Saarang.

To come to a place alone perhaps, participate in events, show some wits, win some goodies and walk back with a bunch of friends. That is Saarang for me.

All through the year, you walk past the OAT, dwarfed by its gigantic size and see it used only once a week if the rains permit. These five days you no longer walk past OAT. You become a part of it and with all the preparations leading to the proshow you make OAT come alive. It breathes, throbs and lives only these five days. That for me is Saarang.

You love to hear a voice over and over again. You want it to win at Saarang. If, however, on the day it doesnt you still walk back deeply satisfied because you know that the best voice in the auditorium has won. That for me is Saarang.

And then one day you wake up to see that its all over. But there is nothing more that could have been asked for. Nothing that could have made it livelier because those five days were a life itself. All this and more only because its Saarang.

Time to come alive. Time to live a Saarang.
